Storytel Kids Alternative: Cocoloops vs Storytel Kids Mode for Multilingual Families

October 19, 20267 min read

Storytel is one of the best-known audiobook services outside the United States, and its Kids Mode gives children their own corner of the app. So why look for a Storytel Kids alternative? Most parents we hear from have one of three reasons: they want something built only for young children, they want a second language and not just more English audiobooks, or Storytel isn't available (or isn't great value) where they live.

This post compares Storytel Kids Mode with Cocoloops, and touches on Audible and Spotify audiobooks where they're relevant. We make Cocoloops, so we've tried to be fair and to stick to what each company says on its own site or app store listing. Details are as of October 2026, and prices differ by country, so always check the company's own site before you subscribe.

Storytel Kids Mode: A Big Library Inside a Family Subscription

Storytel is a Swedish audiobook and ebook service available in more than 25 countries. Its homepage describes a catalogue of over 400,000 books in 10+ languages, and its App Store listing says content, languages and subscription options vary by region.

Kids Mode is a filter inside the main Storytel app. According to the App Store listing, it shows your child only children's stories, lets parents show or hide kids' books on the bookshelf, and uses a PIN so children can't change settings. You can stream or download titles for offline listening, and a parent can listen to their own book on another device while a child uses Kids Mode.

Consider Storytel if: you want one subscription that covers grown-up audiobooks and children's books, you live in a country with a strong local-language catalogue, and you're happy for your child to browse a large library.

Limitations for language learning: Storytel is built as a general audiobook service, not a language tool. Children's titles in one language aren't usually matched with the same story in another, so you can't easily switch the language and keep the plot. When a free trial is offered, Storytel asks for a payment method up front. Check storytel.com for whether it's available in your country and for current prices.

Audible and Spotify: Where They Fit

Audible has a large children's section, and its US site lists a 30-day free trial and membership plans that include a catalogue of titles you can listen to as much as you like, plus a monthly credit on the Premium plan. Most of it is in English. We compare it in detail in Audible for Kids Alternatives.

Spotify includes audiobooks for some Premium subscribers in some countries, with a monthly listening allowance. It's convenient if you already pay for Spotify, but there's no dedicated children's space for audiobooks in the way Storytel Kids Mode works, and the app is full of music and podcasts your child may wander into. Check Spotify's site for what's included in your country.

Neither is designed to help a child pick up a second language.

Cocoloops: The Same Story in Six Languages

Cocoloops is an ad-free audio story app for children aged 2–12. Its central idea is different from any audiobook store: every story is told in the same way in several languages, so a child can hear it in a language they know and then hear the same chapters in a new one. Because the plot and characters already make sense, the new language becomes much easier to follow. We call these parallel stories, and we explain the thinking in The Same Story in 6 Languages.

  • Six languages: English, Hindi, Spanish, French, German and Italian.
  • Native-checked: stories are narrated with AI voices, and every chapter is proofread by native-speaking teachers and language experts.
  • Every story is in Hindi: helpful for Indian families abroad. See our guide to Hindi audio stories for kids growing up abroad.
  • Made for children only: no adult catalogue to filter, no ads, no autoplay videos.
  • Offline: download stories in the Android app. You can also listen in any web browser, and the iOS app is coming soon.
  • Simple pricing: a 7-day free trial with full access, no card required, then $4.99/month, $12.99 for 3 months or $49.99/year, on up to 3 devices.

Limitations: Cocoloops is a young, growing library. Today it has a handful of stories, with Tiny Explorers and the Shining Silver Trail available in all six languages and the other stories in English and Hindi. If you want thousands of titles, Storytel or Audible will give you far more to choose from. Cocoloops is also not a structured course with lessons and tests, and there's no iOS app yet (iPhone families can use the browser).

Which Should You Choose?

  • "I want one subscription for my own audiobooks and my kids' books." Storytel, if it's available in your country, or Audible.
  • "My child gets through a book a day and needs a huge library." Storytel or Audible.
  • "I want my child to pick up Spanish, French, German, Italian or Hindi through stories." Cocoloops. Start with a story in English, then switch to the new language.
  • "We're an Indian family abroad and want Hindi to stay alive." Cocoloops, where every story is in Hindi and English.
  • "I want something made only for young children, with no ads and nothing else to browse." Cocoloops.

Many families use both: a big audiobook service for variety and Cocoloops for the daily second-language habit. If you're also weighing up device-based or lesson-based options, read Cocoloops vs Yoto vs Dinolingo and Why Stories Beat Flashcards.
