Cocoloops vs Yoto vs Dinolingo: Which Is Best for Kids Learning Languages Through Stories?

October 19, 20267 min read

If you're looking for a way to bring another language into your child's day through stories, three names come up again and again: Yoto, Dinolingo and Cocoloops. They're often compared, but they're really three different kinds of product:

  • Yoto is a screen-free audio player for kids, with stories and music loaded from physical cards.
  • Dinolingo is a language-learning program with videos, games, songs, books and worksheets in dozens of languages.
  • Cocoloops is an ad-free audio story library where the same stories are told in six languages.

We make Cocoloops, so we've tried hard to be fair here. Each of these is a good choice for a different family. Details below are as of October 2026 — always check each company's own site for current prices.

Yoto: Best for Screen-Free Listening With a Physical Player

Yoto's strength is the hardware. Children slot a card into a chunky, child-friendly speaker and press play — no phone, no screen, no scrolling. Many parents love it for bedtime and independent play, and the card library includes well-known children's books and music.

Consider Yoto if: you want a dedicated device your child controls on their own, and you mainly want English content.

Limitations for language learning: Yoto says its cards are currently available in English, French and Spanish, and most of the catalogue is English. You'll also need to buy the player and build up a card collection or subscribe to Yoto Club.

Dinolingo: Best for Structured Lessons in Many Languages

Dinolingo is a full curriculum. It offers about 50 languages and tens of thousands of activities — videos, games, songs, storybooks, audiobooks, flashcards and printable worksheets — with progress tracking for up to six children on one family plan.

Consider Dinolingo if: you want a structured, lesson-style programme, you need a less common language, or you have several children learning at different levels.

Limitations: it's mainly on-screen, which doesn't suit families trying to cut screen time, and it's the most expensive of the three. It's designed as a course rather than a set of stories to enjoy at bedtime.

Cocoloops: Best for Learning Through the Same Story in Several Languages

Cocoloops is built around one idea: hear a story in a language you know, then hear the same story in a new one. Because the plot, characters and chapters match across languages, children understand far more of the new language than they would from a story they've never heard. (We explain why in The Same Story in 6 Languages.)

  • Six languages: English, Hindi, Spanish, French, German and Italian.
  • Native-checked: stories are narrated with AI voices, and every chapter in every language is proofread by native-speaking teachers and language experts.
  • Screen-free by design: audio only, ad-free, no games or autoplay videos.
  • No hardware: listen in any browser or in the Android app, with offline downloads (iOS app coming soon).
  • Affordable: 7 days free with full access, then from $4.99 a month on up to 3 devices.

Consider Cocoloops if: you want gentle, screen-free listening that also builds a second language, you're raising a child with Hindi or a European heritage language, or you don't speak the target language yourself.

Limitations: Cocoloops is a young, growing library — today it has a handful of stories, with Tiny Explorers and the Shining Silver Trail in all six languages and other stories in English and Hindi. It's not a structured course with tests and progress reports, and the iOS app hasn't launched yet.

Which Should You Choose?

  • "I want a screen-free device for my child's room." → Yoto.
  • "I want structured lessons in a specific language, possibly a rare one." → Dinolingo.
  • "I want my child to absorb a second language through stories, without screens or expensive hardware." → Cocoloops.
  • "We're an Indian family abroad and want Hindi to stay alive." → Cocoloops (every story is in Hindi and English) or Dinolingo for structured Hindi lessons. See our guide to Hindi audio stories for kids growing up abroad.

They also combine well. Plenty of families use a structured app for short lessons and audio stories for the relaxed, everyday listening that makes the language stick. For a broader look at app types, read Best Language Learning App for Kids: Stories vs Flashcards.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Cocoloops a good Yoto alternative?

Cocoloops is a good Yoto alternative if you want screen-free audio stories without buying a dedicated player, or if you want stories in more languages. Cocoloops works in any browser and on Android, and offers stories in English, Hindi, Spanish, French, German and Italian. Yoto is the better choice if you specifically want a physical, child-operated speaker with cards.

Is Cocoloops a good Dinolingo alternative?

Cocoloops suits families who prefer screen-free listening and story-based learning over lessons and games. It is also cheaper, starting at $4.99 a month after a 7-day free trial. Dinolingo is the better fit if you need structured lessons, progress tracking or one of its roughly 50 languages.

What is the best screen-free way for kids to learn a language?

Audio stories are one of the best screen-free options, because children hear lots of natural language in a context they understand. Listening to the same story in a familiar language first and then in the target language makes the new language much easier to follow.

Which app has kids' stories in Hindi and English?

Cocoloops has every story in both Hindi and English, proofread by native-speaking teachers, for children aged 2–12. Dinolingo also offers Hindi as part of its lesson-based programme.

How much do Cocoloops, Yoto and Dinolingo cost?

As of October 2026: Cocoloops costs $4.99 a month, $12.99 for 3 months or $49.99 a year after a 7-day free trial. Dinolingo lists about $19 a month or $199 a year for a family. Yoto requires buying a player, plus cards or a Yoto Club subscription starting from about £3.99 a month in the UK. Check each website for current pricing in your country.
