The Ant and the Dove Story
One hot afternoon, a little ant was very thirsty. She walked to the edge of a sparkling stream to take a drink.
She leaned forward to sip the cool water, but the bank was slippery. Her tiny feet slid, and — splash! — she tumbled into the stream.
The water swept her along. She kicked her little legs as hard as she could, but the current was too strong. "Help!" she cried. "Somebody, please help me!"
High up in a tree beside the stream sat a white dove. She heard the tiny cry and saw the ant spinning in the water.
The dove thought quickly. She pecked a big green leaf from the branch and let it float down onto the water, right next to the ant.
The ant grabbed the edge of the leaf and climbed on top. The leaf drifted gently along until it bumped against the bank, and the ant scrambled safely onto dry land.
"Thank you, kind dove!" she called up, dripping wet. "You saved my life. I'll never forget it."
The dove cooed softly and settled back on her branch.
A few days later, a hunter came creeping through the trees. He carried a net, and he was looking for birds. He spotted the white dove resting on her branch, and he crept closer and closer, lifting his net, ready to throw.
The dove didn't see him. But someone else did.
Down on the ground, the little ant was carrying a crumb home to her nest. She saw the hunter. She saw the net. And she saw her friend, the dove.
"I must help her," said the ant.
She ran as fast as her six little legs could carry her, climbed up onto the hunter's foot, and — nip! — she bit him hard on the ankle.
"OUCH!" yelled the hunter, hopping on one foot. His net flew sideways and landed in a bush.
The noise startled the dove. She saw the hunter and the net, and she flew up, high into the sky, far away and safe.
That evening, the dove found the ant by her nest. "Thank you, little friend," she said. "You saved my life, too."
"You helped me first," said the ant. "Friends help each other."

Float a few leaves in a bowl or sink of water and let your child test which ones are best at carrying a small "ant" — a grain of rice or a raisin. Big flat leaves win. It's a gentle way to retell the story with their hands.
